The upgrade is a security upgrade in the true sense only if it answers how the door was attacked. That is looked at first, then the options are explained:
- High-security cylinder resistant to snapping, drilling and bumping, cut to the right length so it sits flush.
- Guard plate over the cylinder, so there is nothing to grip.
- Stronger keeps fixed deeper into the frame, where many doors give way.
- A safe fixed to the floor or a wall, for what should not be in a drawer: safe opening and fitting.

After a forced entry
Should I wait for the police before the door is touched?
Ask them when you report it. Photograph the door, the frame and the lock from several angles first in any case; those photos are what the insurer will ask for, and they let the door be secured without losing evidence.
Will my home insurance pay for the new lock?
Many policies cover the repair after a forced entry. Keep the police report number and the invoice, and check your policy or call the insurer; the invoice describes what was replaced and why.
The frame is split, not just the lock. Can you still make it lock tonight?
In most cases the door can be made to close and lock for the night, with a temporary fix if needed. A split frame may need a carpenter afterwards; you are told honestly if so.
What does a high-security cylinder add over the one I had?
Resistance to the usual attacks: snapping, drilling, bumping and picking, in different combinations depending on the grade. It pays off most when fitted with a guard plate so the cylinder does not stand proud of the door.
