Crevillente station sits in its own small settlement, the Barrio de la Estación, on the Cercanías C-1 line between Alicante and Murcia. By the town’s own reckoning Elche is 9 km away, Alicante 32 and Murcia 47. Plenty of people work in one of them and come home by train. And now and then, somebody reaches the front door and realises the keys are in a drawer, a locker or a jacket on a chair at work.
There are three ways out. Which one is best depends on a few honest questions.
Option 1: go back for them
Worth it when the keys are somewhere you can get into again tonight, the journey is short, and there is still a train or a lift back.
Not worth it when the office or workplace is already locked, the last train back has gone, or the round trip is longer than you want to spend on a platform.
Before you set off, ring someone who is still there. Nothing is worse than a long trip to a locked building.
Option 2: wait for a key
Worth it when someone you live with, a neighbour or the landlord has a key and can be there soon.
Ask yourself how long “soon” really is, and where you will wait. If there are children, medicines or an animal inside, waiting may not be an option.
Option 3: call a locksmith
Worth it when neither of the others works tonight. What to expect:
- You ring, say where you are, and hear an honest estimate of the drive.
- You are asked to show the home is yours. If your documents are inside, they are checked once the door is open.
- The price is agreed at the door before anything is done.
- A door that was only pulled shut is usually opened through the latch, without damage. A door locked with the key takes more work; you are told which before you decide.
If it is the middle of the night, this is simply an emergency call-out.
The keys are not lost
One thing makes this situation easier than a lost bunch: your keys are safe in a known place. There is no need to change the lock afterwards unless you have reason to worry. Once the door is open, you can collect them tomorrow.
If they really are lost, on a night out or in a crowd, read what to do when keys go missing during Holy Week; if it is the car you are shut out of, there is the El Hondo guide.
